James Nachtwey: Photographer, Human Being

Date October 9, 2008

Photographers go to the extreme edges of human experience to show people what’s going on. They believe your opinions and your influence matter. They aim their pictures at your best instincts: generosity, a sense of right and wrong, the ability and the willingness to identify with others, the refusal to accept the unacceptable“- James Nachtwey

Seeing these pictures…

It makes me want to sell all my gear and never take another photograph, because I don’t think I’ll ever be able to do something as meaningful and life-changing with my work.

And it makes me want to work harder than ever to try to attain even a fraction of Nachtwey’s ability to tell human stories in a compelling way, and to use my photography to actually help people.

Quitting is not the answer, Greg. You have a gift to take great photos. Don’t spoil that or treat it as worthless. Your ability to capture feelings and emotions is evidenced in your photos. I hope this only helps to inspire you to use your photography talents to tell people’s stories one snap at a time. Peace!
