This was not a self-propelled lawnmower. He would wheel himself into position, and then cut the area around him.
Preparing to replace the string.
The large rocks in the yard often cause his line to break, or to get pulled off the reel.
Taking a break.
A friend stopped by to visit, and his dog came over to say hello.
Dan lost his leg about six years ago. Originally from Wisconsin, he came to Abilene in 1976 after he got tired of cleaning pools in southern California. No one pays him to cut the grass and weeds around the warehouse near where he rents a room, but he considers it “doing his part.” We talked about Ike, Zimbabwe, swimming pools and Texas.
