Tastes of My Youth

Date August 19, 2008

Tonight I made some bread from scratch.

When it had barely cooled, I sliced it up, slathered it with butter and topped that off with Bovril.

It took me back more than a decade, when I would run home from the Master Baker Tea Room with a fresh loaf, and top it off with butter and Bovril for an afternoon snack, before a dip in the pool.

Delicious.

    Is Bovril just like Marmite?

If so, then I’ll hold me tongue. I don’t want to risk deletion.

Technically, Marmite and Bovril are different. They are similar in that they are both concentrated extracts that taste absolutely delicious on hot bread or toast (or stirred into a cup of hot water), but Bovril is a beef extract, whereas Marmite is made from yeast. According to Wikipedia, Marmite is acceptable to vegans and vegetarians, but Bovril would probably kill one of those!

I notice you didn’t link to this Bovril site… Wonder why?

I think they should have stuck with the original name (as found on Wikipedia): “Johnston’s Fluid Beef”. Granted, at least they didn’t go with “Johnston’s Beef Fluid” cause that could be lots of things…

Veggiemite, Marmite, any yeast-based spread looks like ear wax on toast.

Dude, if your ear wax looks like Marmite, you need to see a doctor!
