How to Pack for the Olympics

Date August 11, 2008

A friend passed on this amusing little gallery by world-class photojournalist Vincent Laforet. It highlights what he took to cover the Olympic Games in Beijing, as well as how he packed it.

Just for fun, I looked up the prices for some of this stuff, if you were to buy it new on Amazon.com. I stopped when the grand total for his cameras and lenses came to over $64,000. That’s not counting his lights, his tripods, his cables and Pocket Wizards and the digital film he’s taking. Or the cases. All told, I wouldn’t be surprised if the total value of all that stuff was more in the $90,000 to $100,000 range.

Of course, when you see his work, you know it’s worth every penny.

He definitely has some incredible equipment there… Redundancy indeed! I really liked how he labeled all of his lenses with big numbers, since he obviously has several to choose from and this takes some guesswork out of looking in a rush. I would not want to be behind this guy in customs…

Rumor has it that Canon will be announcing their 5D replacement on the 26th of this month. I am assuming you may already know this, but if not… then there you go! Also, Nikon is rumored to be unveiling another DSLR on the 27th of this month, perhaps in response to Canon’s 5D or it could be the D90 (the D80 replacement)… Exciting camera times my friend, as perhaps the Canon vs Nikon pro battle begins - benefiting both camps and all those serious about photography.

That is the beauty of this current “escalation” in the battle for the hearts and minds of consumer and pro photographers: the customer benefits as each company tries to outdo the other in terms of innovation, reliability, and PRICE! I’m certainly waiting with bated breath.
